The Lakehouse

Posted on May 31, 2010 by Azare Puasa

For the past week, I watched this movie over and over. I had it in my Vision:M. So it’s convenient for me to watch on the go.  I remember when i watched it the first time (back in April 2006), I was overwhelmed with the sequence of events as time jumps here and there. I cannot figure out whether they are in 2004 or 2006!! I was dazed and I tried to give my best explanation for the ending (i.e how Alex is still alive) to my partner cos she too did not get understand it.

I roughly know the story line as i had watch the original korean version (Il Mare) a couple times. Comparing between them, the original wins hands down. I did not like the Lakehouse as it looks kind of superficial. Like the scene where tree out of nowhere magically appear  in front of Kate’s apartment. And it lacks dramatic details too. You will only see and hear the screeching sound of cars and bus and then you see Alex lying flat on the road. In contrast, you see the slow motion action of Eun-joo’s drops her glass and it shatter on the ground as the car hit Sung-Hyun and he is  flung into the air and finally the impact as his head hits the ground. And finally, I like watching Jeon Ji-Hyun :). She’s definitely more beautiful and sexier than Sandra Bullock.

However, the  story line is the congruent to the original. Both started with the Kate and Eun-joo informing the next occupant to forward the mail to the new address. The paw paint marks along the pathway. Alex and Sung-Hyun realize that the apartment is still under construction.  Both has scene where the time distanced couple does the activity as what the partner instructed. Kate walked around the city guided by Alex’s annotated map while Eun-joo walked along the tree line boulevard as suggested by Sung-Hyun.

After watching a few times, I’m beginning to like the lakehouse. I can keep up with the time jumping. I’ll watch it a few more times and see how it goes. I believe to appreciate it, i have to understand the turn of events first. Well, off i go for another 99 mins of The Lakehouse.

I’ll provide the sequence of event here some day. Till then, go here to read the proper synopsis -> http://imdb.to/bjxdL1
