Note To Self
The easier way to install self-hosted WordPress on my host is using autoinstallers provided available in cPanel like Fantastico, Softaculous, etc but I want to experience manual installation just to see how complicated it is. It seems not too difficult. Probably my installation was smooth sailing. No issues encountered. Successful in the first attempt.
I referenced instructions from here:
This is what i did:
| /** The name of the database for WordPress */ define(‘DB_NAME’, ‘database_name_here’); /** MySQL database username */ define(‘DB_USER’, ‘username_here’); /** MySQL database password */ define(‘DB_PASSWORD’, ‘password_here’);Test |
That’s it. I’m done. I have installed wordpress manually.
I learned 3 customization useful when using the WP Twenty Eleven theme. This theme is plain and simple. Ideal for the page that I’m building. but there are features which i want to remove. First things first. I need a child theme. This link guided me on how to create a Child Theme. When that is done, I can start customizing i.e. removing features i don’t need.
| Delete/Prevent “recent post” | |
This is best done in a child them. Download a copy of showcase.php from your server (wp-content/themes). Open and edit this file. Search and delete this section
Upload the file to your child theme folder and reload your blog. |
|
| Remove categories in post footer | |
I would not want the bottom of my posts to show the “Posted in <CategoryName>” sentence. To remove that, I open the style.css of the child theme and add the following lines:
| |
| Remove Comments form | |
| This does not require editing to the theme. Instead, in the dashboard, go to Post -> All Posts. There is a checkbox to the left of column “Title” both on top and at the bottom. This will select Check all post. Then click on the drop down box with the word “Bulk Actions”. Select “Edit” and click the apply button. I see a form and on this form, I look for drop down box with label “Comments” and select “Do Not Allow”. I click on the Update button and I’m done. The comments form will no longer appear at the bottom of the posts. Can do this for pages as well. |

WordPress.com or WordPress.org? WordPress.com refers to wordpress hosted sites while wordpress.org are self hosted site. What is the difference? As usual, I’ll present it in the usual gangnam Azare style i.e. a table. When it comes to formatting webpages, html table is my first choice. Formatting tables in wordpress is a bit different from normal html. If you want to know how to draw a borderless table, read my aha-moment-borderless-table-in-wordpress-com-post
| WordPress.com | WordPress.org | |
| Cost | Generally free. As in hosting is free. If you don’t like yourchoseofname.wordpress.com domain name, WordPress.com provides domain name purchase. And you can premium theme from wordpress.com too. | Everything is at your own cost. Domain and hosting purchase. As well as purchase of essentials plugins for anti-spam, backup, SEO, etc. |
| Monetization | WordAds but only sites with custom domains and “moderate to high traffic and appropriate content” are eligible to apply. Affiliate links is also not allowed. | No restriction to make money. Advertising, selling products, affliate links. Plugins available to make it easy to add the functionality. For example, WPZon makes it easy to populate a blog post with keyword targeted Amazon products. |
| Customization | Minimal customization. Can’t upload anything to the server. So in terms of themes and plugins, restricted to what is offered by wordpress.com. And customization to these themes are relatively limited as well. As mention, wordpress.com offers premium theme. No 3rd party plugins allowed. | Complete control of your site. Install themes, widgets and plugins as desired. Take extreme care though. Possible exposure to viruses, hacks, exploits, malware, spyware. If that is not enough, there could be incompatabilities. |
| Knowledge | Suitable for technically challenged people. Setup with just a few clicks. And you concentrate on content. Write post, pages, add tags and categorize it. Don’t need to bother about technical stuff like spam protection, backups, updates, security, spam-protection, etc. These are all automatically handled. | Needs quite a fair bit technical skills. If hosting does not provide one script install, setting up may require require manual database creation and file upload. You are on you own when it comes to spam protection, backups, updates, security. |
Which is suitable for you? Well it all lies on your needs. For a beginner, I think it’s good to start to with wordpress.com. Familiarize and get a feel of the admin tool, build up a collection of content and then thing about moving to self hosting. That’s what i’m doing.

This is trivial but useful. especially for debugging. Having line number displayed makes the error “visible”. I mean I can dive in to the problem area. The feature is off by default. The setting is in the Preferences dialog. Either go in Window -> Preferences or right-click on editor window and select “Preferences…“.In the dialog that appears, go to Editors -> Text Editors and check the “Show line numbers” as highlighted in the screenshot below.
Click OK. And the line numbers appear on the left side of the editor window
I love using table to format my post. And it makes sense to hide the border. In web pages, it is simple adding table attribute border=”0″. As you might have know, we can use html tag in wordpress.com. However, that same table border attribute does not work when i added. With the border visible, my posts looks ugly.
The way to hide the table border is adding attribute style=”border: none;” in table tag as well as all the table data (<td>) tags.
Here’s the table without the tag:
|
<table> <tbody> <tr> <td>Column 1 Row 1</td> <td>Column 2 Row 1</td> </tr> <tr> <td>Column 1 Row 2</td> <td>Column 2 Row 2</td> </tr> </tbody> </table> |
Ugly isn’t it? Now here’s the table with the tag added:
|
<table style=”border: none;”><tbody> <tr> <td style=”border: none;”>Column 1 Row 1</td> <td style=”border: none;”>Column 2 Row 1</td> </tr> <tr> <td style=”border: none;”>Column 1 Row 2</td> <td style=”border: none;”>Column 2 Row 2</td> </tr> </tbody> </table> |
Aha!
